This is a grass roots citizen led coalition to buy the preservation rights to Fairy Creek and lead the way towards reconciliation efforts. We are going to raise enough money to make everyone a deal they can’t refuse.
It's going to be more worthwhile for the companies, governments, indigenous nations and other stakeholders to preserve this land for future generations then to cut it down. Fairy Creek and it’s attached forest is about 5150 acres out of about 6 million acres of tree farms on Vancouver Island.
If you are one of those people who protested against Old Growth logging and thought we had won with the victory at Clayoquot you should feel betrayed. Our governments have been trying to decide the best way to save the old growth forest and all the while, they have been talking and logging. The things we though we had saved are gone.
Many of the old growth protectors are entering their elder years and have skills beyond holding protest signs. Many of us spent our years creating other options and meaningful ways to implement change. Protests and blockades are extremely important tools to bring attention to a situation, but sometimes, it’s all about the money.
Let’s play their game for a while and see if we can direct some of the enormous wealth held by humans to preserve the special places and begin the shift towards a better planet. Billions of dollars are used to create mega projects or create weapons of war, how about funding environmental efforts to the same level as the national defence fund. After all, we are at war trying to mitigate climate change and trees are our number one tool to naturally restore the balance.
Vancouver Island has lost 97% of it’s old growth forest. It is estimated that 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions are the result of deforestation.
Rainforests produce about 20% of our oxygen and store a huge amount of carbon dioxide, drastically reducing the impact of greenhouse gas emissions.
Rainforest and Old Growth Forests are almost all gone and we need to save what is left for future generations and our planet!!
Your support and contributions will enable the saving of Fairy Creek.*
